Getting Closer to the Maloca of the Jaguar
From 1938 to 1971, Araracuara, located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, was home to one of the three maximum security prisons in Colombia. Its virgin jungle, powerful river rapids, and wildlife made escape considered impossible. It is very exciting to think that the region is now available to us.
This unique experience takes place in the buffer zone of the Chiribiquete National Park, the largest protected area in Colombia. It was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2018 in recognition of its “outstanding universal value” both for nature and people. The buffer zone is a megadiverse territory and is home to several indigenous cultures that are willing to share their culture and traditions with visitors.
Elevations in the area range from about 200 to 1,000 metres above sea level. Its climate is tropical, with temperatures between 24°C (75 °F) and 30 °C (86 °F), and with strong fluctuations between day and night.
This wide-ranging adventure includes tours of the eastern high mountain range, the plains of the Yarí River, and the Amazon rainforest within the Caquetá region.
This adventure also includes navigation through the Caquetá River to reach the different sites of interest, immersion in community projects in the region and the consumption of typical products of the region. eQual Travel has built the relationships needed to make this experience unique.
