OTUN QUIMBAYA
NATURE SANCTUARY AT THE FEET OF
LOS NEVADOS NATIONAL NATURAL PARK
AN ENIGMATIC MOIST FOREST
This fauna and flora sanctuary, crossed by the Otún river, has a privileged location on the central range of the Colombian Andes, right next to the snowy peaks of Los Nevados National Natural Park. Its conditions of tropical moist forest make it prone to be surrounded by fog, giving it a rare and enigmatic atmosphere.
Along the different trails we could follow, we can observe a wide variety of birds and mammals like antpittas, red-ruffed fruitcrows and Andean cock-of-the-rock, among the more than three hundred reported bird species as well as mountain pacas, sloths, river tapirs and howler monkeys that even come very near the shelter. There’s also the possibility of taking a 2-day hike to the Otún lake and camp in the area.
